There are a number of reasons why you may be unable to start the Hubstaff timer application to track time.
The Allowed Apps setting is set to Desktop Only
Hubstaff offers the ability for company management to require team members to only track their time through our desktop applications (this setting is known as Allowed Apps). Only our desktop applications offer the full suite of tracking functionality like screenshots, apps, URLs, and activity tracking.
If the setting is set to Desktop Only and you are trying to track time on the Mobile timer apps, Chrome browser extension, or our Web timer built into the website, you will see an error stating that you are not allowed to track time on that client. Therefore, the Hubstaff timer won’t start.
Disabled for tracking
Members can be enabled or disabled for time tracking. You may be disabled, which will not allow you to track time. Ask a manager or owner of the organization account to verify if this is the case, and enable you if they want you to track time.
You aren’t assigned to any projects
Only team members that are assigned to projects will be able to track to them. If you aren’t seeing any projects listed on the timer application, this may be the case for you. This is most common with new team member just joining the account and their manager has not yet assigned them to any projects.
Your role doesn’t permit time tracking
You may be assigned to a project(s), but only as a Project viewer role. Project viewers are unable to track time to projects, they have read only access. If you are currently a project viewer, but need to track time, please ask your manager or the owner of the organization to change your role.
You are required to select a task
With Hubstaff’s project management integrations, management can toggle a setting to require tasks be selected when tracking time. This would prevent you from being able to track to just a project, but not have a specific task selected.
You haven’t clicked on a project or task to select it
The timer button is not able to be pressed to start tracking if a project or tasks is not selected. Make sure you have selected one first, then try starting the timer.
